Confusion over pension

The Wayne Review gives you "facts" about Social Security, but they seem a little dubious.

Social Security will no longer exist if something isn't done (the warning comes from both sides of the aisle as well as independents)

People keep giving different dates for the "end" of Social Security... 2012, 2018, 2042, etc. What these dates usually mean is that at that point in the future, Social Security is projected to take in fewer dollars than it pays out. This does not mean the "end" of Social Security. The federal government has run deficits for the past several years -- did the federal government cease to exist?

Oh, and not everyone believes that Social Security is in as bad shape as the Bush administration argues. (Most reasonable people would argue that the general budget deficit and Medicare are much bigger problems.)

[T]he stock market can be quite volatile at times, however, there are safe places to invest your money, including mutual funds, government bonds, and so on;

Yes, government bonds are a much safer investment route. That's why the Social Security trust fund itself is invested in government bonds, which make an average 3% return each year. Why add on the extra, unnecessary risk of the stock market?

[W]hen we pay into social security we are paying in for ourselves not other people (at least that was the plan)

As pointed out in the link above, this certainly hasn't been true since the 1983 Greenspan/Reagan Social Security reform, where we've purposefully been overfunding Social Security in order to save money for the Baby Boomers.

It seems like Mr. Wright is the one who needs to "read the proposal and history of social security".
